Finding the Best Home Security System

It’s no wonder people are feeling very secure any more, even in their own homes. The media is overflowing with information about the terrible events that are taking place in the world every day. When you see these things happening, the first thing that probably comes to your mind is how you’re going to ensure the safety of your own home and family.

Security companies everywhere are rising up to meet the needs of concerned homeowners. The market is overflowing with security products and systems which all claim they will make your home safe and secure. However, as with any other product on the market, you need to do your homework in order to find the best home security system to meet your needs.

There are some elements which are common to all quality security systems including a control panel, a siren, a motional detector, window and door contacts, a remote keypad, and a central monitoring system. There are also a lot of different options you can add to your basic system for a price. These include smoke detectors, detectors that hear glass breaking, panic buttons, pressure mats which go underneath your rugs, closed circuit televisions, and alarm screens for windows.

Never make a verbal agreement with a security company. Demand a written quote with everything spelled out in detail. If a company refuses to give you one, give that company the boot! Your contract should include setup, all equipment and supplies needed for installation, monthly monitoring fees, and warranties. Even if you’re tempted by the contract one company presents for you, don’t just fall for a great price. You also need to look at quality, services offered, and repair service when you make your decision.

There are some basic rules of thumb you should follow during your quest for the perfect security system.

Get recommendations of companies people you know have used.
Always get written quotes from at least three companies.
Make sure your contract includes a definite installation date. Some companies get months behind on their installations.
Talk to past customers to learn their experiences with the company’s service personnel after installation.
Check to see if the company does background checks on its installers. You just don’t want to leave anyone unattended in your home. Also ask about the amount of training installers are given.
Talk to your police department. When they get a security system call, how fast do they respond? And do they charge you fines for false alarms?

No company can promise that a burglar will never break into your home with their system, because the possibility of a break-in is always there. Insurance companies will tell you, though, that people who have security systems have much shorter visits from burglars than those without.

When seeking a quote, always request that a representative visit your home in person. If a company refuses to send someone, consider them out of the running. The purpose of the visit is so that the rep can look over your home to help him make recommendations about what system will do the best job. How could he possibly know what would work best without having ever been inside your house?

The entire maze of security-related products and systems can be overwhelming at first. Do your research, talk to your friends, visit with company reps, and you’ll be able to decide more knowledgeably on the best home security system to provide for the safety and well-being of your loved ones and your home.

Home Security Weapons

There are many people who swear by guns and insist that everybody who is serious about being safe and secure in their own home should own at least one gun. But not everybody is comfortable having a gun in their home, especially if they also have small children. And nobody should own a gun for home security unless they are willing to use it-as any gun expert will tell you, you never point a gun at a person unless you are ready and willing to end that person’s life. Many people simply are not ready or willing to take another life, yet, home security remains important. Fortunately, there are many home security weapons that can be used to increase safety without putting people’s lives at risk.

The most obvious and popular of the home security weapons is mace. Mace is a very powerful pepper spray that burns and temporarily blinds people. A good squirt of mace can give you the time or the opening you need to hit with another home security weapon or call the police. Bats make excellent self defense weapons. You can sleep with one under the bed. They’re cheap, innocuous, and aren’t a real threat to anybody unless wielded the right way. Some people keep a knife on hand as well. A knife will certainly get the job done.

Sometimes the best home security weapon can be your own body. If you take a self-defense course, or are participate in activities like kickboxing, karate, boxing, and similar sports, then you are set to be your own best defense weapon.

Home Security Management, Applying the 3 D’s – Deter, Deny, Detect

If you think about the process of burglary, unlawful internal access to your house is the final hurdle for the intruder. In many cases your home security was breached long before the physical act of entering your home took place and there are several things that you could have done to prevent the burglar from making the decision to breach your home security.

In the commercial or business security environment the standard protocol for developing a security plan is to apply the 4 D – Deter, Deny, Detect and Detain. While the last protocol, detain, is not an appropriate or recommended home security protocol for the untrained, following the deter, deny, detect approach when planning your home security requirements will go a long way towards significantly reducing your risk of burglary.

Visual deterrents are your first level of home security protection. In a high proportion of cases visual deterrents are sufficient to prevent crimes of an opportunistic nature. Home security visual deterrents include external intelligent lighting, home security alarm system monitoring warning signs, perimeter fences, lockable gates, garages and/or sheds, visible and audible alarms, CCTV cameras, home security screens, neighborhood security patrols and our faithful hounds.

If the aforementioned deterrents are not effective, the second level of home security protection is measures, which deny access through physical security barriers. Effective home security measures must commence at the boundary of your property and be applied progressively towards the target risk, the internal area of your home. Home security access denial measures include boundary fences, lockable gates, window protection, security screens, and quality locks.

While strategies to deter and deny unlawful access to your premises go a long way to reducing your home security risks, intruders who are intent on gaining access into a premises will not be deterred or denied by these home security control measures. The third home security protocol is therefore intruder detection. Intruder detection systems include home security alarm systems, cacti cameras and pet dogs. These serve as a final barrier in your home security plan and when combined with active visual deterrents and intruder denial systems such as locks and gates, go a long way to reducing the vulnerability of your home security strategy.

If you are considering developing or upgrading your home security applying the 3 D Deter, Deny Detect to evaluate your home security requirements is a positive step in the right direction.
